Jul. 22nd, 2009 09:42 pmHello!
So I've been superbusy with work and moving and not having internet at homeand writing a McKenna/Giotto fic with
bubbles_san so I've been ignoring this comm a little.
To make it up to you, I made a poll!
The first question asks if you're a reader or a writer. By this, I mean "do you only read, or do you sometimes play?" because I assume you're reading if you're writing. You'd be very confused if you weren't.
Anyway, on with the poll:
[Poll #1433708]
What I mean with the last one is: right now, we have a weekly post of alt.enterprise.gossip along with the other, more sporatic challenges and round robins. What if, every month, I took a popular theme from the last few weeks and made it the new weekly thing? So, next month would be genderswap or TOS. We'd keep playing in those worlds until it was time to change. You guys could even have oppinions about them!
(Because I can stop you from doing that now?)
I have plans for a new callenge either tomorrow or Friday, but I'm curious to see what you all are thinking now.
Also, would there be interest in a friending meme?

"ONE DAY KEVIN RILEY WOKE UP FULL OF ALIEN SEX POLLEN. SO HE SLEPT WITH DR. MCCOY, CAPTAIN KIRK, CHEKOV, SULU, RAND, CHAPEL AND UHURA. AND THEN JOHN KYLE WEPT BITTER TEARS INTO HIS OATMEAL. THE END, TAKE THAT

Date: 2009-07-23 03:42 am (UTC)TAKE THAT BACK SIR OR MADAM *covers Kirk's ears*. He is *too* awesome XD

Date: 2009-07-23 03:54 am (UTC)Also, everyone's always fawning over him and acting like he can do no wrong. He cheats, he breaks rules, he makes his own rules and then breaks them too, and then everyone acts like it's okay because it turned out well in the end. The most he ever gets is a slap on the wrist and a warning not to do it again.
And also, people act like he's so great at keeping his crew alive, but crewmembers die every week on his watch- how is that protecting his crew? Assigning them to a landing party is practically signing their death warrants, yet everyone treats him like he's this great hero who never gets anyone killed.
And that's why I hate him. It's not because he's flawed, it's because everyone acts like he's not.

Date: 2009-07-23 04:04 am (UTC)Well he is flawed. I don't think anyone acts like he's not, it's just that people love him regardless I think is the problem. But to each their own, y/y? :3

Date: 2009-07-23 04:31 am (UTC)He's on trial about whether to stay in the fleet at all. He sneaks onto the ship- okay, he was the only one that realized what was going on, yes, but that's beside the point at the moment.
So he sneaks on the ship, right? Then, when things get a little hairy, the first officer gets promoted to Acting Captain- completely logical- and rather than promoting the second officer to first officer, as per the chain of command, the cadet who's about to get kicked out of the fleet gets promoted instead.
Later, after insulting Amanda (which you just don't do), he becomes Acting Captain and Saves the Day.
Which is all fine and dandy, and let's have a party.
What Should Have Happened:
He gets a medal. He gets cleared of charges. He gets promoted one rank (not six), and gets assigned to the Enterprise with the knowledge that if he keeps up as he does, then when he has a little more experience, he could be captain.
Instead, he becomes captain at 25, straight out of the academy, with absolutely no experience under his belt, and nobody (universe wise, I've seen sensible parts of the fandom complaining) sees a problem with this?
Example of the death thing:
In the novel 'The Captain's Daughter', when Chekov gets into a fistfight with Captain Harriman about causing
hisSulu's daughter's death, he says that "Keptin Kirk vould have found a vay. She vould not have died." Chekov seems to think that no one ever died on Kirk's watch, and this was the attitude generally directed at him from all sides. Now, can you honestly say that if you had someone in your life who was like Kirk, who always broke the rules and got away with it, who always got credit for other people's work, who always had to be the center of attention, can you honestly say that you wouldn't have a problem with him/her? Because I would, and I don't know why so many people apparently wouldn't.
(See? It is not just irrational hatred, I have given this thought.)

Date: 2009-07-23 08:56 am (UTC)And with Chekov, that seems really circumstantial. It sounds a lot more like it's just wishful thinking on his part. Someone just died and he's trying to cope, like when someone loses a loved one and they're in denial? Like "Oh he wouldn't have died if.. x and x happened or if x was there." Y/N? He admires his captain. He just thinks he could've saved this person, because he's like a child (to me) and he thinks his great captain can do anything.
Or maybe that's me overthinking that hahaha, nvm in that case! But that's just the vibe I'm getting on.
Um, no I honestly can't say I wouldn't have a problem with him/her. I probably would *shrugs*

Date: 2009-07-23 02:15 pm (UTC)Chekov was in his- I think maybe fifties?- at the time that happened, so he's far more than a child. He's got experiences of his own under his belt, and anyway, I meant that just as an example of the attitude generally directed at Kirk re: lifesaving, not as an isolated incident. Kirk managed to kill off half his crew in just three seasons and everyone still acts like he's this giant hero just because he kept seven or eight specific people alive for five years.
