Those of you who are familiar with the TOS episodes might remember the fantastic episode in which the Enterprise comes across a planet with 1920s gangster culture.
So, in gentle reboot fashion, Our Heroes are toddling along, being Heroes and Righting Wrongs and whatnot when they encounter a planet identical to Earth was. In 1969.
Why 1969? Well, my friends. 69 makes me giggle.
Also, 1969 had a lot of important events.
January 20 – Richard Milhous Nixon succeeds Lyndon Baines Johnson as the 37th President of the United States of America.
January 30 – The Beatles give their last public performance, on the roof of Apple Records.
April 4 – Dr. Denton Cooley implants the first temporary artificial heart.
June 3- British singer Elton John releases his first album, Empty Sky, in the United Kingdom
June 28 – The Stonewall riots in New York City mark the start of the modern gay rights movement in the U.S.
July 20 – Apollo program: The lunar module Eagle lands on the lunar surface. Neil Armstrong takes his first steps on the Moon.
August 9 – Members of a cult led by Charles Manson murder Sharon Tate, (who was 8 months pregnant), and her friends.
September 2 – The first automatic teller machine in the United States is installed in Rockville Centre, New York.
October 5 – Monty Python's Flying Circus first airs on BBC One.
November 10 – Sesame Street premieres on the National Educational Television (NET) network.
November 15 – Regular colour television broadcasts begin on BBC1 and ITV in UK.
December 1 – Vietnam War: The first draft lottery in the United States is held since World War II.
This was also the year that Women were allowed into the FFA and HIV first hit the United States.
Look at all that. So much that we take for granted. Imagine (all the people? Living side by side?) what a year like that would look like 300 years after, rather than 40. What amuses people, what horrifies them? And what just plain confuses them?

This is the year that Richka Milhousivich Nixov infiltrated your silly country, Hikaru. Not that you would ever know, because it is a well guarded Russian secret. It is proof of respect for you as my friend that I have decided to impart this wisdom onto you. Feel very proud of this.

You might like this, boys. Aren't you always watching Monty Python together and pretending you don't?

It's also the year we beat you to the moon. Though this society doesn't seem to be developing space travel at the same rate.

Nikita Armksandrov was also a very proud Russian citizen but yes, I agree. Perhaps they are not progressing due to a lack of the friendly animosity between our two countries? If this is America, of course, which we can only assume from the geography.
...Hikaru, if there is not a Russia on this planet I may have to found one.

You mean Neil Armstrong? Pavel, you are the worst at forcing people to change nationalities. And what in the Universe is "friendly animosity"?
What do you mean you found Russia?

Ah, Hikaru, your name is horribly disfigured enough from your mixed heritage, the fact that Nikita's family decided to change his name to allow your country to accept him should be a familiar concept to you.
Our friendly animosity! When your country did not understand the values of communism until we eventually became united underneath many of the identical concepts which now form the Federation! Friendly, yes?
I will found Russia, I use this language correctly, yes? I will stick a flag into a snowy place and bestow upon it the wonderful name of the motherland. You may be Empress Consort to my Tsar.

My name is not disfigured. It's a perfectly nice East Asian name and you will leave it alone I like it.
It was called the cold War. Not the Cold Friendship Parade. I don't think there was a lot of "friendly" involved. But my people were hanging out in Internment camps for part of it, so who knows. We may have missed some.
You did, I read it wrong. I read "I found Russia." But sure, I'll rule with you. What are my powers?

But cold is a very friendly thing! It brings everyone together to find the warmth. Very good Russian concept. But let us not dwell on my correctness, are we not supposed to find Captain Kirk? He has been out of communications for over an hour now, it is probable he might be dead or injured or engaged in coitus with the female wife of the leader of this planet!

Also your powers are that of a queen but not in the nasty slang that the man on the bus shouted at me while I was brushing that dirt from your hair.

In this case they meant that relations were not warm, not
You know all this and you're doing that thing where you act cute and pretend not to, aren't you?
Knowing Kirk he's doing all of those. We are searching. I'm searching my PADD, you're searching yours.
So I can.. um.. wear dresses? What does a queen do?

Of course I am not! That is not one of the things I do.
Yes, but I feel this is just work to keep us busy. Should we not be breaking into places? I do not like the people in this restaurant, they seem to be very weird and are reminding me very much of a lady I once new. I feel I am to shout, how you say, get a haircut and apply for a job?
I do not know what queens do, you can decide what they should do in Novaya Rossiya.

Yes it is. All that knowledge in your curly head. You know what you're saying isn't true.
A lady, huh? Old girlfriend?
I vote for fencing and badassery.

I am a genius, Hikaru, why are you so set in your own ideals of what you think is right to assume that I am not?
Yes, she was very crazy like these people with the body paint. But she was a nice woman and a bit older than me so, um. Maybe we should talk in person about this? I do not know if it is proper use of this communications channel.
Okay then! Fencing and badassery. Perhaps we should convene in the park to compare results? I will see you in ten minutes!

Captain Kirk your channel has just become available does this mean that you are now responding to communications??? We were worried that you had been captured for your large torchbearing reputation!

No worry Chekov, i'm here and receiving. Must've been some interference. No, no, I'm safe for the moment at least. What's the word where you are?

Lt. Sulu and I were sent to try and find your signal and to mingle and observe. I have made observations but Lt. Sulu says my mingling lacks finesse. With your signal found I suspect we should be returned to the Enterprise unless you have more need for us?
Are you in good health? We have discovered that this place does seem to be identical to the United States in the period of late 1960s to early 1970, although we cannot pinpoint the year, but the society seems to not be developing space travel at the same rate and we do not know why.
Do you have new orders, sir?

You are a genius. So am I, so is Kirk. This is Starfleet. We're all cracked out brainiacs with no social skills. It happens, and Neil Armstrong wasn't Russian.
I see. I'm sure you had a lot of girlfriends back in Russia, huh?
Yeah, we can meet. By the drum circle?

But I am more genius than you and I say he is. And you certainly have more social skills then me that lady we met was quite taken with you and that happens more often with you than me, I think.
Yes I have had piles of girlfriends. I am very experienced with them all. But I met Irina in the Academy before she dropped out. She was older than me but also very nice.
I do not think these people are enjoying my presence. I was just called Russki. I believe that there is a Russia here and I think the animosity is here also, could you please arrive quickly thank you?

I'm just dandy. Mingling with the locals and observing at the moment.
I agree with your assessment, before 1972 I believe. Take what you've gathered and head back, I'd like to get started analyzing this place asap and you and Sulu aren't going to be as successful undercover here given the social climate, unfortunately. And be sure to discuss the lack of space travel with Spock if you haven't already.
