Tony would move heaven, earth, and time itself to get Caroline back. It's not optimism, it's pure stubbornnes.

Oh Tony. Pike on the other hand has to be more practical and lead the crew through this. Pike is always aware of the worst case scenario, even if he doesn't accept it or advertise that fact.

That's why he's the captain and Tony is the chief of security. Because Pike has to lead everyone, but Tony has to save everyone. (And he refuses not to let anyone die, too. No matter what! *dramatic pose*)
