Side Game: Dystopia

In the world you are entering, there is a Federation. There is an Enterprise. There is even a Captain Kirk.

But in this world, they are not as you know them.

George Lowther, 27, is the captain of the pirate ship known throughout the galaxy as the Enterprise. Of course, he's not the real George Lowther, and neither was the man before him, a fellow called Chris Pike. They're in the process of trading the identity, so Pike can retire, having made his fortune. The new Lowther, real name James T. Kirk, has hired on a crew, and they're off on their first voyage, affiliated with the Federation of Interstellar Pirates.

So. How's the crew doing? And, of course, who's fucking?

So I don't get to be upset about moving into her place? Now she gets you every day and I get to be the loved one you see when it's convenient.

That defense only works in three-year-old court, One. I know he's abrasive and has a tendency to jump to conclusions. You can smack him down if he's mean about the baby but otherwise try to go easy on him. You're older and wiser than he is. He knows you matter to me, it's not hard to tell.

If I was a worse person I would say fuck it all and whisk you away now.

We've both got shitty mothers, kid, face it. Mom's aren't half of what they used to be these days. And you're not going to be in my position; you'll have a whole starship that you can bring to visit any time you want to and there won't be any risk of you both being arrested and executed just for associating with each other.

Believe me, kid, she was just as much a shock to me as to anyone else. I've spent most of my life believing I couldn't actually have children and then wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, suddenly I'm craving watermelon covered in peanut-butter and I can't keep anything down.

You get to be upset, that's your right. It's going to be a big change. I'll see you whenever you come by, it's not about convenience. And once the kid's older maybe we'll come out to you sometimes.

Why should I go easy on him if he won't go easy on me? You're supposed to treat others like you want to be treated, right? Clearly that's how he wants me to treat him. And he said she was a lie that I made up to get to you.

I wish you were a worse person. But if you were you might not care.

I don't know anything about your mother. I can't reply. But I'm not going to be safe. I'm not only going to be a wanted man for being Lowther, I'm James Kirk. There's no safety for me.

Please stop calling me kid. My name is Jim.

What was I just saying about pirates and manners? Be the bigger person, I know it's hard when he gets snitty. I know, he's implied as much to me as well, also that I could be a sleeper programed to love you because you're my controller. He doesn't seem to realize the severity of what he says. Feel free to inform him of it but don't get angry over it. You two provoke each other enough already.

I know, it's horribly tempting. We can run away when everyone's ready and will be ok without us.

The planet's out of the way and the fleet is easier to lose than they think they are. Yes, they're always after us but there are ways. We'll work it out. I've been in danger since I was 21, you coming to visit won't make it any worse.

But your son. He shouldn't be in danger. Not from me. He's screwed enough, with fugitive parents.

One says if he wants her to stop calling him kid he needs to try listening to her wishes and stop calling her baby a him.

We'll take care of him. And I trust you'll take precautions, we'll have some things set up.

That was amazing. Thank you. But can we check on the Captain now? I'm worried about him.

Most welcome. Yeah, he said we should comm him, or we could disregard that and just track him down.

Exactly.

I think...I think he may have been crying earlier.

It is. Any idea where he might have gone? His quarters seems too easy.

Should try it anyway, otherwise, ready room, or maybe the observation deck?

Let's check his quarters and his ready room first. If he's been crying, I doubt he'll want the crew sticking their noses into his business.

Work together, united front so he can't get rid of us.

Also he said last night something about control and cooking, we should try captain's mess too.
