From the Sec'y of the Admiralty, His Lordship Admiral Richard Barnett,
In the service of Her Imperial Majesty, Majella Augusta II, Regina Albion and Its Colonies and Protectorates, the Year Imperial 2258.

To Captain Christopher Pike of Her Majesty's Star Ship Enterprise.

Sir,
You are requested and required to assemble your officers and repair to the shipyards of Riverside, Iowa, the British States of America.  Report there to your ship and proceed with all due speed to the Vulcanian System, there to offer aid and comfort to the allies of the Crown.  They have reported unexpected natural disturbances and it is the duty of all officers of the Admiralty to give assistance.  The appropriate intelligence is appended to these orders in a sealed missive not to be opened until HMSS Enterprise is en route to the Vulcanian System.

Yrs,
Admiral Ric. Barnett

***

In a second note, attached:

Pike:
You have been chosen for this based partly on your own merit and partly on that of your mixed-blood second.  Despite the secrecy, this should not unduly tax your officers, else we would not have such green ensigns within starleagues of such important allies.  I need not say that showing themselves well here can only improve their prospects.  Your radical proposals do your officers as much mischief as they do yourself and I am loath to see such as your translator or that young Hussar damaged by political manoeuverings.  Why you must choose the most embarrassing moments of recent Imperial history to champion, I can make no guess, but I advise you this as a friend.  That madman Kodoss is dead and neither the Crown nor Parliament will thank you for bringing the incident up again.
Behave for the politicals, impress the Vulcanians with Imperial grace and humanitarian ideals, and leave such matters to the social carers.

Yrs. Sincerely,
Ric. Barnett

post script.  I understand that ward of yours is showing himself the rake again.  His mother is a fine officer and his brother a respected voice at the Scientific Academy, but unless young Jas mends his ways, I do not doubt some more talented officer will be seeing him to the surgeon or the undertaker on the blade of a sword or blast of a phase pistol after a duel.

Ric,

My merit should be worth enough on it’s own. I worry less about your taxing of my crew than you think. They are of that particular brilliance which you and your fellows hate so. Lucky for myself that makes them the best sort of crew. As time is of the essence I’ll keep my retorts short, but you can consider the usual batch applied nonetheless. If any reputation can be ruined it is certainly only my own, and any additional person fool enough not to be able recover their own from any trifles of mine did not deserve it in the first place.
I’ll hold my tongue on Kodoss and all other matters when I see fit to hold it; whatever ‘mischief’ I may bring is, as always, not without thought. Though I assure you that for the time being I shall be at my best.
I can play nice as any with the politicals when needed and you know there’s no better to spout off idealism in charming manner. Least of all another who actaully believes it.

Sincerely,
Pike

post script. I’m well aware of goings on in my own household - ward included. Inadvisable as his actions on occasion may be, there is always a winner in duels and more than a few of them last well into their grey years. And I have yet to see reason why Jim should not be one of them - with a modicum of guidance of course.

Xpr,

That was meant in nothing but friendliness. For goodness' sake man, you are as prickly as a cockleburr. I had thought to warn you of the temper of the Houses this season before you threw yourself headlong to the jackals and the reporters. Despite what you would believe, I do wish naught but the best of the officers under my command, from the lowest ensign to the most self-sabotaging captain. I like it no better than you that the service has become such a rats' nest of politicians instead of officers. It was, I grant, indelicate of me to bring up young Kirk and I suppose all young men and women favor carousing at that time of life.

In haste,
Ric.

Ric,

Ah but I have I ever taken even the most friendly of advising well? The Capitol is making you soft if you can only take that little of my attitude. Parliament will be what it always is; I appreciate the sentiment of warning but I do keep half an eye on them, though it does not often seem so. The presence and influence of the politicals in our fine fleet is, most unfortunately, here to stay for the time being. I know your feelings on the dreaded matter all too well; only more the reason for those few us of with our senses still left to do our best to keep them at bay. It was most indelicate but I will not hold it as harshly against as usual under the circumstances. Perhaps I’ll even have forgiven you by the time of our return.

in haste indeed,
Xpr

Xpr is as aggravating as ever. I do not know what to do with these pets of his, but if he can but temper himself he may yet turn out a force with which to be reckoned. This situation with Vulcan unsettles me, but I can not think why.

Weather continues fair and there are no solar flares in the offing. The Enterprise, Farragut, and Newton should debark with no trouble.

Dear Sir,

Mister Kirk shall be aboard the ship. I believe he has been held up by some business with his solicitor concerning some papers of his father's, but nothing would keep him from rejoining the ship in time to sail.

Dear Doctor,

Surely. And should his business keep him I'm also sure a brief detour to his latest telegram address should allow us to convince whatever is keeping him to release him for his service.

Respectfully,

somewhere over the thrice-cursed ocean, violently ill

Jas.,

Do you think I am made of sugar? This confounded contraption dented my best hat in a temper before I found it the apple I was hoping to eat, but no. I had the fortune to look over the side while trying to retrieve my hat, fed the fishes my breakfast, and quite disturbed the navigator with the resulting exclamation. I am undergoing a shuttle ride without the assistance of drink, since you have not returned my flask, and I have stuck my neck out so far with the Captain on your behalf as to imitate a giraffe in the Paris Zoological Institute.

Your credit will only last as long as my patience and my patience without the benefit of liquor is not at its longest.

With deep resentment,
Leonard

McCoy,

Be kind to Eustace, Ms. Gaila cobbled him together for my last birthday. I send my regrets in regards to your breakfast, but have replaced the contents of you flask and shall return it - I hope the rum is to your ever discerning taste. Do not mind the captain, he has his piques just as the rest of us, and you needn't be concerned with our relationship.

Which is longer, dear Leonard, your patience or your neck?

With the benefits of peppermint schnapps,
Jas.
